Description

Built Vessels Series – Wood Fired by Trevor Dunn

These pieces draw inspiration from the traditional Chinese method of making water storage jars. While those jars were humble containers, my forms diverge to incorporate influences from many cultures, emphasizing dynamic symmetry, subtle undulations, and a sense of strength. The technique—learned while studying in China—relies on large coils of soft clay built up without a wheel, then shaped and strengthened through paddling with patterned tools that also create textured surfaces. The vessels are finished through wood firing to 2350°F over 72 hours, during which constant stoking builds and burns back coal beds that layer ash and color onto the surfaces. This process leaves dramatic markings of sintered ash. Cooling is also active, with rhythmic stoking that maintains a reducing atmosphere, producing deep, rich hues unique to each piece.
